So, I went to a networking event last week. It was a speed networking event (much like speed dating) at the Knoxville Chamber. Since this was specifically set up for a group that I meet with on a monthly basis, we basically knew everyone in the event. What was surprising for me was how much I didn’t know about the companies that were represented! I was quite embarrassed as to how much I didn’t know about these people/companies that I speak to on a very regular basis. I pride myself in being a pretty decent networker, but I have to take another look on how well I am networking with the people I surround myself.
I guess I am out of practice with my networking skills, but I will tell you what… speed networking gave me a natural high. There is no time to waste with “Hellos” and “How ya doins’”…you have 2.5 minutes each to get the basis of your business across to your table partner. Drilling down your “elevator speech” to 2.5 minutes including questions is quite a task, but nevertheless, a much needed one. I made sure to take notes on information that might come in handy for future business or for a referral. I could tell those that do speed networking or other networking groups on a regular basis…they had their speech down! I need to do some work on mine, but overall, I wanted to make sure I gave a great picture of my services and the types of customers I am always looking for. This is the key….make it easy for them to think of a potential new customer for you!!
Overall, I met with about 15 individuals that represent all types and sizes of companies and organizations. Not only did the event get my networking juices all stirred up, but it also gave me a much better perspective of how business professionals are all trying different things right now to boost their sales and marketing. Everyone is working harder these days to be successful…but at least we can all support each other thru this time and hopefully keep the referrals coming and going!
